When you’re fishing the Bering Sea, coffee isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity. Staying alert and awake isn’t about productivity, it’s about survival. It’s not uncommon that our crew works 30 or more hours in a row—baiting pots, setting pots, pulling pots, sorting crab, and all the while floating around some of the most dangerous waters in the world. Fittingly, our crew consumes a metric shit-ton of caffeine—which is why I created Northwestern Grind.

Like our crab, Northwestern Grind is the highest quality coffee nature can provide, so when you absolutely have to have a great cup of joe, leave nothing to chance and grab a cup of ours.

Northwestern Grind is made from 100% pure Arabica beans from the highlands of Colombia. Just as we soak our pots for maximum yield, our coffee is roasted at higher elevations and lower temperatures to create a rich and robust taste. The result is the best damn cup of coffee you’ve ever tasted.

Featured on the Discovery Channel hit series Deadliest Catch, the now iconic Northwestern was built in 1977 at Marco Shipyards in Seattle, WA specifically for the crab fisheries of Alaska’s Bering Sea.

The Northwestern was one of the first boats to fish Opilio crab, which turned out to be the bread and butter fishery of the entire crab fleet. Today, the Northwestern is one of the most successful boats in the fleet and continues to fish Red King, Tanner and Opilio crab, and is one of few boats to engage in pot cod fishing. The Northwestern continues to meet its quota year after year and bring in money for the crew and family.

Sig was basically born with coffee coursing through his veins, the son of a Norwegian fisherman, Sig began fishing at the young age of 14 with his father aboard the Northwestern.

After high school, Sig took up fishing fulltime. At the age of 26, Sig became the boat’s captain. From his earliest years at the Northwestern’s helm, Sig has known that his position in the captain’s chair depends completely on results.

For over 20 years, Sig has seen to it that the Northwestern is one of the Alaskan crab industry’s top producers. A greater accomplishment still, is the lack of any major accidents onboard the Northwestern. The best captains bring home the catch, the boat and the crew
